Dr. Lisa Mannix,Butler County Coroner, has seen a dramatic increase in the number of deaths related to drug overdoses. Of the 114 total cases investigated by the Coroner’s Office in the first quarter of 2014, 50 have been attributed to drug overdoses. 11 cases involve heroin; an additional 10 cases involve heroin combined with fentanyl; eight cases involve fentanyl combined with other drugs. The remaining cases involve other drugs or are awaiting final toxicology confirmation.

The drug death totals for the first quarter of 2014 are a 139% increase over this same time in 2013.

The Butler County Coroner’s Office works with law enforcement agencies, fire/EMS and hospitals to investigate and determine the causes of death in these cases.
